Ingredients
2 cups Cooking Apples (2 large) peeled and sliced thin
2 tbs Sugar
1 tsp Vanilla
1/3 cup Walnuts ground
1/3 cup Sugar
1/4 cup Dry Bread Crumbs
1/2 cup Butter, melted
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
4 sheets Phyllo Dough (18 x 18) or (18 x 14)
Powdered Sugar
Preparation
Toss apples with 2 tablespoons sugar. cinnimon. and vanilla. Set aside.
Combine walnuts, 1/3 cup sugar, and bread crumbs.
Lay first sheet of fillo on a clean dish towel. Brush with butter and sprinkle with 1/4 of crumb mixture. Continue to layer fillo with butter and crumbs on top of first sheet until the four sheets are completed. Spread sliced apples on 1/3 to 1/2 of fillo.
Begin rolling strudel, as for a jelly roll, from the end that has the apples on top. Gently roll until all fillo dough is rolled up. Carefully lift onto a cookie sheet, seam side down. Brush roll with butter. Bake at 350 deg for 45 minutes or until apples are tender and pastry is crisp. Cool slightly: top with sifted powdered sugar. Makes about 12 slices.
